Carden Conejo has adopted the “world-class” Singapore Math curriculum for students in Kindergarten to 8th Grade. The Singapore Math method of teaching mathematics is based on the textbooks and syllabus from the national curriculum of Singapore. Singapore’s students have consistently ranked first in the world in a widely accepted comparison of global math skills, Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. Scores for U.S. students were among the lowest of the industrialized countries. The American Institutes for Research has concluded that: “Singapore has a world-class mathematics system with quality components aligned to produce students who learn mathematics to mastery.” The U.S. Department of Education’s study concluded in part: “Singapore’s textbooks build deep understanding of mathematical concepts through multi-step problems and concrete illustrations that demonstrate how abstract mathematical concepts are used to solve problems from different perspectives.”
The Singapore Math program has a consistent and strong emphasis on problem-solving and model drawing with a focus on in-depth understanding. The curriculum covers a relatively small number of topics in-depth and carefully sequenced grade-by-grade. The concepts are carefully taught from concrete through pictorial to abstract. Students are expected to master each concept before moving on. Subsequent lessons build on prior concepts.
Carden Conejo has two specialist teachers teach mathematics: Mrs. Donna Brunasso teaches students in Kindergarten – 3rd Grade, and Mrs. Kathleen McCray teaches students in 4th – 8th Grade.
