Carden Conejo School, formally known as the Carden Junior School of Thousand Oaks, was founded in 1971 by Mary Carpenter and Thelma Sitton, who together founded Viewpoint School in Calabasas. In 1981, Nancy Carsten and Georgan Schmitz acquired Carden Conejo School. In the spring of 2005, Holly and Bob Fleming purchased the school from Mrs. Carsten and Mrs. Schmitz. For the nine previous years, Mrs. Fleming served as a teacher at the school.
Mrs. Fleming has received her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has also been awarded her master's degree in education from California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks. She has been admitted into California Lutheran's educational leadership doctoral program and plans to complete the requirements during the next four years.
Mr. Fleming's background is in business and finance in Fortune 100 companies. He has received his bachelor's degree in science (Chemical Engineering) from Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. He has also received his master's degree in business administration from Harvard University.
Carden Conejo School adheres to the Carden System of Education, offering the Carden curriculum from Pre-School through Eighth grade. The Carden Method includes a guidance program for the development of desirable character traits in students. The Carden curriculum covers all the following elementary subjects: reading, spelling, functional grammar, composition, literature, French, Latin, mathematics, science, history, geography, music, art and art appreciation, and computer training
